Andre Steynberg from Intrepid Expeditions planned our bucket list trip. Ours was a bucket-list trip, and everything was wonderful. The places we visited were as fantastic as we could have hoped for. Each of the safari camps treated us superbly and provided unforgettable experiences that we're still glowing about. Anyone with a sense of adventure should to go to Botswana and/or Zimbabwe at least once in their lives, but these are also places we would love to go back to again. Our agent was critical to making this happen, because we have such busy lives that we might never have done enough research to pull the trigger on our own. He was thorough and informative in helping us choose an itinerary, and his recommendations were spot on. He also remained in an active and helpful supporting role throughout the actual trip, so we felt quite confident even while being in such a new environment. We couldn't have asked for more. The main reason we went was to see the animals while they are still there and in their natural environments, and we were treated to encounters beyond our expectations. It is remarkable to what degree the animals will ignore the presence of the safari vehicles right next to them. We saw a complete cheetah hunt, leopard mothers taking care of their kittens, lions mating and a veritable zoo of other animals and birds. We were also able to see some of the animals on walking tours; we saw rhinos (!) and baboons up close, and elephants at a respectable distance (had to walk away when a mother elephant started to act protectively of her baby). The people who operate the camps were friendly and knowledgeable and we enjoyed learning about their lives. Botswana is special because of its stability and its strong management of its wild animal parks, and we felt welcomed to visit and share them. Because of the problems with the Zimbabwe economy (which didn't affect us directly at all), we heard stories of greater personal hardship than in Botswana. As a result, we developed a strong respect for the resilience and resourcefulness of the people of Zimbabwe, and we were glad to have made it part of our trip. We didn't stay long in South Africa only because we had limited time and were traveling via Johannesburg. We would have liked to see more there and will have to go back.We were determined to see several safari camps with different environments, and we succeeded in that (we went to a total of four). If someone is only going to do one trip like this, I still think it is a good way to go. But if we return, we will probably see fewer camps and mix in other activities. One thing we would NOT change is that we stayed 3 nights at each camp. I would advise anyone going to camps like these to stay at least 3 nights at each one. That gives enough time to feel relaxed at each place while still seeing much of what they have to offer. Thank you Andre Steynberg.
I just wanted to let you know that my safari was fabulous. It was everything I could have wanted and more. The accommodations were superb , the people at all lodges and camps were wonderful, and the game was plentiful. I had to be restrained from jumping out of the vehicle to pet the lion cubs (just kidding) Thanks for arranging all this for me. Cathy
The trip was phenomenal. Everyone was very professional. Our travel agent, Andre Steynberg (Intrepid Expeditions) was very helpful in the planning of our trip through Rwanda to see the gorillas and using a private guide and vehicle in Tanzania. We loved Tarangire National Park in Tanzania. The tents and the food at the Sanctuary Tent Camp were fabulous. We enjoyed our time in the Serengeti as well. Our driver/guide was great - very knowledgeable and very friendly and accommodating.I wish that we had gone to Kenya for part of our trip..only for more of a chance to see the rhinos. We met several people at the end of our trip who had gone to Kenya and had seen Rhinos. We did not see any on our trip. We enjoyed Chumbe Island, but you really only need 2 nights there. We originally were booked for 4 nights and we decided to leave and stay at a resort on the Eastern coast of Zanzibar - which was lovely!
The experience planned by Andre Steynberg and Intrepid Expeditions exceeded our expectations in every way. For our first trip to Africa, Kenya (East Africa) and it was wonderful to have an expert to create a remarkable and seamless journey for us. This safari travel specialist is thoughtful and kind, and we were amazed at how all of the little things (being met at airport, ability to store our bags without us even asking, giving us hats to wear during cold morning game drives) were thought of in advance and magically happened. Seeing the plentiful animals. In my mind, I thought that we would be driving all over the savannah looking for animals. I was amazed that, starting at the airstrip at our first stop we saw plentiful game, and we were able to get so close to them. The experience repeated day after day, with memorable encounters every day (seeing the honey badger was a highlight for us honey badger fans!). We witnessed lions breeding, a lion kill, saw a rhino interrupt a lion hunt, the wildebeast massing to cross the Mara. It was amazing.I really can't think of anything that I would do differently. The three different camps focused on different types of wildlife, and the accommodations were sufficiently different that each one was a new experience. The trip really exceeded our expectations in every way.
I had a great experience using Andre Steynberg and Intrepid Expeditions. My sons and I wanted to go to South Africa and Botswana on two weeks notice at the end of July, 2017. I knew we needed to create a bespoke itinerary but I was a little bit intimidated by not knowing my way around South Africa at all. I had done some preliminary searching and received multiple quotes that were absurdly expensive. I came across Andre Steynberg and from the outset I could see that he was extremely knowledgeable and understood what I did want and what I did not want. I wanted luxury but at sane price; to be in the hands of people I could trust on the ground; great game viewing; adventure for my sons. Our travel planner booked us at Sabi Sabi Selati in Sabi Sands in South Africa and Mashatu in Botswana. We loved both camps. Selati is like an old world safari experience as I had always imagined it to be in terms of decor. The food was great, the evening meals with other guests at the lodge were cozy. Mashatu is a different experience altogether - the game viewing is more plentiful and less of a trek to find, the suites more luxurious, the compound more extensive and overall less expensive than Sabi Sabi. In addition, there are bicycling treks at Mashatu which my sons really liked as well as a dug out they call a hide where you can view the game up close as the animals drink at a watering hole. I had insisted that I did not want to fly from Sabi Sabi to Mashatu and our planner did arrange for a great driver to get transport us by road but I would not recommend doing that - the trip is too long (6 hours) and we ran into some difficulties on the road so if we go back, and I hope we do, we will fly from Sabi Sands to Mashatu. He also arranged for drivers to pick us up at the airport when we flew into Johannesburg, to pick us up the next day to take us back to the airport for the flight to Skukuza, to drive us to Mashatu, to get us to Polykwane Airport for our flight to Capetown and to pick us up at the Capetown airport and every one of those drivers were prompt, courteous, polite, knowledgeable about the area. I had made my own arrangements to stay overnight at the in Johannesburg and highly recommend that hotel - fabulous rooms and suites, great rooftop bar, gorgeous views of the city from throughout the resort. Overall, five stars to this safari tour planner - he will listen to you and steer you in the right direction.
I wish I had more space to go in depth, but this was simply THE BEST trip we've ever been on. Not just the experience, but also how completely was organized by Andre Steynberg to meet our extensive needs. We stayed at 5 different lodges, had daily private game drives and tours in addition to a private commuter flight to another country and everything ran smoothly without a single hitch...it made visiting Tanzania and Rwanda really stress free. Andre made himself available 24/7... literally! He gave us incredibly helpful information before our journey that made our experience perfect which was backed up by everyone at Intrepid Expeditions. He was able to allay all of our fears and concerns regarding our travel to a new country. All the information was on point and his patience couldn't have been more appreciated. In conclusion, we are already looking forward to our next safari planned by none other than this planner! If you could take your trip again, what would you do differently? Nothing! It was perfect!
Andre Steynberg helped us plan an overall outstanding experience with this Intrepid Expeditions from start to finish. He listened to what we wanted for our safari experience to be and designed our trip accordingly. There were no surprises and everything was exactly what we expected. The preparatory material and phone calls with the agent answered every question we had. I would highly recommend Intrepid Expeditions. The highlight of the trip was the gorilla trek in Rwanda. In addition we got to see every animal on our wish list (Cheetah, Leopard, Rhino). One of the changes I would have considered is flying from camp to camp rather than drive but TAnzania is beautiful. I would have spent 2 days in the middle serengheti (mbuzi mawe) rather than one and two days in the northern serengheti rather than 3. Thanks again Andre and Intrepid Expeditions.
Hello Simon,Things have finally settled down here and I need to let you know that our daughter, Judy said our Africa experience was "magical" and we whole heartedly agree with her.Ernest and I want to thank you for your expertise, vision and profound grasp of what we wanted. We could not have asked for more. You told us our guides would be amazing and they were. We had Victoria from Nomad (whom you very well may know) who was an absolute fireball and knowledgeable beyond belief. She immediately got that Jake was a bug nut and provided him with enough information to sate his little entymologist soul. He so wanted to get "into" a termite mound and Victoria made it absolutely clear why he did not and he totally understood. She got us through some up close and personal dealings with elephants and "retired general" buffalos. We loved her and wanted to bring her home with us (as you predicted would happen). David was our guide in the Serengetti and he was fabulous in a different way - quiet and unassuming but full of knowledge and we loved his Masai soul (wanted to bring him home too). It was with David that we experienced the life and death struggle between a Tawny Eagle and the Spitting Cobra. Had he not said, "let's wait a few minutes" we would have missed the whole thing.Everything from the bucket showers to the French Press coffee made the accommodations the experience of a lifetime and we cannot wait to get more. We left part of our hearts on that magical continent and we so need to go back.We have not one complaint and we thank you so much for your help in putting this very special experience together for us. I especially appreciated your help when I learned that my mother had passed and we needed to cut our trip short by 2 days.We are so glad we found you.Thank you again,
Simon, On behalf of my family, I want to thank you for everything you did for us in planning and organizing our trip to Africa. I can’t even begin to explain to you how perfect our trip was. We knew the trip would be great but the places that you found for us, the arrangements you made, and the companies you used were absolutely amazing. In addition to that, every single place had special little things for Case and went above and beyond to make sure he had things that he needed and that he was included. In Cape Town, the 12 Apostles Hotel was beautiful. They were not full so they upgraded our rooms at no charge. Our tour guide was Suleiman Soeker and he was absolutely fantastic – would highly recommend him if you can request tour guides. We were able to go to Robben Island because of the level of waves in the water; but, he worked with us to find some other great things to do – including the #1 rated coffee shop in the world. I don’t drink coffee but my parents do but their hot chocolate was delicious! Also, they had a little kids size cup and they made Case some hot chocolate with a little bulldog face. It was the perfect start to the trip to be able to see a lot of things but also get used to the time change. Cape Town had a special feel to it and I’m glad that we were able to go. Sabi Sabi was our very favorite part of the trip. The lodge was indescribably beautiful. Everyone was extremely friendly. Our guide was Bethuel and our tracker was Zulu. They were absolutely phenomenal. And they were so great with Case. We would absolutely visit this place again if we ever went back. The food was great, the people were great, the experience was great (I mean – they had hot water bottles in the cars in the mornings and in the beds at night!!! WOW!). We saw so many animals and they tried to make sure we saw a wide range of places on the reserve. I just can’t even put into words how much we loved it! Livingstone was good because we enjoyed seeing Victoria Falls and going to the Village. One evening, my mom and I went over to the sister hotel of the Avani and they were a little friendlier than the hotel we were at. The Avani was beautiful but the staff were definitely the least friendly of any of the hotels we were at. Also, this hotel doesn’t have any sort of heat in the rooms and it was chilly enough at night that it needed some. We asked at the other hotel and they do have heat in their rooms. So, if we went back to this area, we’d probably rather stay at the other hotel. I think it was called The Royal Livingstone. But, the price point may be entirely different. I don’t know. But, the guides we had for Victoria Falls and the Village were great. Getting to the Serengeti was an experience . We enjoyed the Serengeti and we were glad that we were able to have two different safari experiences. Everyone was nice at the camp. We ended up being really glad that we scheduled the things to do in Nairobi because we had a fantastic time. The elephant orphanage was a great experience. We found out that our elephant had been moved to another location because he was getting older – so, if someone else does the same thing that we did – we would recommend making sure they adopt one of the youngest elephants. We’re not upset at all and Case understood why we couldn’t meet his elephant. But, just giving you a heads-up. We still enjoyed meeting all of the elephants that were there and learning about their stories. Carnivore was absolutely delicious and a great experience. We all really like it a lot. Just wanted to give you a quick summary. But, we just cannot thank you enough for this amazing experience. Several people have asked who we used and I gave them your contact information/website. If you have any other questions or want any other feedback, please don’t hesitate to ask. We’re happy to help/give feedback/recommend you to anyone! Thanks again –
We just returned from our honeymoon safari (Tanzania with an extension to Zanzibar) which Andre Steynberg of Intrepid Expeditions planned and we couldn't be happier with our decision to book with him and Intrepid. I spoke with several safari experts before booking, and felt most comfortable with this agent because of his knowledge of course, but more so his attention to what we were looking for and our expectations for the trip. To be honest, we really weren't sure what to expect and needed guidance on what the main attractions should be- our agent asked all the right questions of us to make all the appropriate suggestions, and from there we worked out what would be must-sees and other possible excursions. Our itinerary was tailored to us, and we really appreciated the personalization. Everything went so smoothly from the moment we stepped off the plane- getting us through customs, booking us with a professional (and funny) safari guide, logistics with all our car/plane transfers, beautiful and thoughtful accommodations throughout all the locations we visited. Pacing of the trip was very important to us, we didn't want to spend too much time in the car all at once, and we also wanted to make sure we included a level of cultural experiences as well as physical activity. Andre Steynberg perfectly planned this out and we enjoyed every single day of our 2 week trip. I would recommend working with our agent with full confidence, he made everything so easy and we loved our honeymoon experience. And finally, Tanzania was so amazingly beautiful, you can't go wrong here, just do it.
